Why are businesses forming captives?

Businesses form captives because commercial insurance keeps costing more while covering less. Premiums climb at renewal as gaps and exclusions widen, so buyers pay more each year for thinner protection. Captives have become the leading alternative risk strategy because they answer both problems, and several forces are accelerating the shift:

  • Pricing on your record. A captive prices coverage on your loss experience, not a market rate inflated by everyone else’s claims.
  • Coverage the market can’t design fast enough. Risks are emerging, interconnecting, and turning volatile faster than insurers can build products for them. A captive writes what your business actually needs.
  • Adverse selection. As the best risks leave the commercial pool, coverage gets more expensive for everyone who stays, which pushes the next tier of strong risks to leave too.
  • A friendlier regulatory environment. More domiciles now license more captive structure types, opening the door for mid-market companies, not just the Fortune 500.
  • Profit. Underwriting margin that once left with your premium stays as surplus, and technology has made distribution easier, so a captive can also sell smarter products and keep the underwriting profit on them.

The trade is real. You retain risk, so good years pay you and bad years test you, which is why a feasibility study comes first.
